A is used to cut straight lines in wood. When sawing along the grain of wood, the workpiece is held in a bench vice according to common practice. When sawing across the grain of wood, the workpiece is normally held in a bench hook.

Cutting curves
A is used to cut curves in wood or plastics. The blade is fitted to the frame with the teeth pointing backward. It cuts when the saw is pulled.

A may be used to cut curves in thin pieces of wood or plastics. It has an electric motor to move the saw blade up and down. The blade is fitted to the machine with the teeth pointing downward.

An is used to cut curves in thin pieces of wood, metals and plastics. It is like a round file with a very small cross section. It can be fitted into a handle or held in frame
